They were playing under new stadium home lights and only the second head coach in their 12-year existence.

For all those new features to open the 2018 local high school football season, however, they still looked like the same old Manvel Mavericks.

Possessing again the offensive firepower opposing defenses love to hate.

The Mavs scored on their first five possessions and rolled up 434 yards of total offense in their 42-6 dismantling of Clear Lake on Thursday night at the AISD’s new Freedom Field facility.

Manvel, who lost 49 lettermen during the offseason, was also playing for the first time since dropping a 53-49 heart breaker to Highland Park in the Class 5A Division I state title game last December.

“I was worried about how our team would respond,” said new Manvel head coach Kevin Hall, who took over the reins from Kirk Martin last spring after being elevated from his former defensive coordinator post. “There were so many kids we had to replace.

“But they came out ready to play. They were excited. They wanted to forget what happened last year and try to start off on the right foot. I was a little bit worried at halftime that they might take their foot off the gas, being a team that doesn’t have a ton of experience, but they didn’t.”

The Manvel defense also delivered a number on Lake, holding the Falcons to just 124 yards of total offense and seven first downs. The Mavs set the tone for the evening by forcing Lake to a quick three-and-out on the game’s opening series and then driving 60 yards in six plays for the season’s initial tallies.

“Clear Lake is an extremely well coached football team,” Hall said. “This was not their night, but it wasn’t that they didn’t have players playing hard and not that they’re not coached well. (Lake head coach) Larry (McRae) does a great job over there. This just wasn’t their night. It could have easily been us in this situation, but we were fortunate.

“I was disappointed in our penalties and our turnovers, but that’s for us as coaches to get it fixed. I can assure you we’re going to get it fixed.”

Mavs’ running back Ladarius Owens (12 carries, 112 yards) busted loose for 21 yards to the Falcons’ 30-yard line on Manvel’s first possession and two plays later, senior signal caller Josh Coltrin lofted a perfect strike to a wide-open Justin Valenzuela from 33 yards out.
