Houston Sterling caught Manvel napping with the quick strike and provided more than a few other surprising fits along the way in Thursday’s 11-5A Division II gridiron clash.

However, the playoff-bound Mavericks still dominated the affair in between and came away with a 62-26 victory at AISD Freedom Field for their fourth consecutive victory.

Playing for the first time in two weeks, Manvel appeared to be out of sync at times, but delivered their share of big plays, as well, to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in district.

Mavs’ head coach Kevin Hall wasn’t exactly a happy camper afterwards.

“We were sloppy in all three phases of the game,” Hall said. “I told our kids all week long that this team can play and was well coached with good football players. I don’t think they believed me, as evidence of the way we came out and slopped around.

“Part of that is credit to them too. They’re a good football team. The best thing that came out of this is our kids know. They know we slopped it in all the phases. We will fix it.”

Hall’s counterpart on the other sideline, Sterling coach Kanavis McGhee, stunned both the Mavs and the Freedom Field crowd with a deep pass call on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Raiders’ signal caller Terrance Brown found Kamrin Byrd at midfield and the senior receiver outraced Manvel defenders the rest of the way to complete an impressive 75-yard catch-and-run journey to the end zone.

Brown kept the early momentum going with a successful two-point conversion run to increase Sterling’s lead to 8-0.

Despite having their own first-play touchdown called back due to an illegal block on the next series, Manvel also crossed the goal line in blurring fashion.

Eric Hebert promptly scooted 48 yards on the jet sweep and Luis Moreno booted the extra point through the uprights to cut the gap to 8-7 with 10:51 left in the period.

The Mavs’ secondary then made Brown pay for an errant fling deep in Sterling territory, as Trevion Robertson picked off the pass at the Sterling 22-yard line and galloped to paydirt to give Manvel the lead for the first time.

Moreno added the PAT for a 14-8 Manvel advantage with 8:57 remaining in the first.

Ladarius Owens’ seven-yard run made it 21-8 into the second, while the Mavs added three more TD’s heading into the break. The senior tailback delivered 144 yards on 17 carries.

Garrison Johnson exploded for a 75-yard run, while quarterbacks Josh Coltrin and Tucker Yarbrough fired TD passes to Roland Kimble (8 yards) and Johnson (6 yards), respectively, to increase the margin to 42-8 at intermission.

Trayvon Jenkins’ 35-yard interception return set up the Coltrin-to-Kimble connection.

Owens opened the second half by breaking loose for an electrifying 88-yard kickoff return TD.

Sterling finally found the scoreboard again on a safety and ensuing TD drive, but Coltrin (11 of 18 for 144 yards, two TD’s) got Manvel back on trek with an 11-yard scoring toss to Justin Valenzuela to make it 55- 18 with 3:56 left in the third.
