Manvel lands 18 picks on 11-5A D-II Football team

he area finalist Manvel Mavericks landed 18 players on the All-District 11-5A Division II Football team.

Running backs Garrison Johnson and Ladarius Owens were joined on the first team offense by receiver Eric Hebert and offensive linemen Layden Robinson, Demerius Countee and Jamail Zenon. Both Owens and Robinson were unanimous selections. Owens rushed for 1,242 yards and 17 touchdowns, while Johnson added 870 yards on the ground and 22 TD’s and Hebert grabbed 50 receptions for 753 yards and eight scores.

Tackle De`undre Potts made the first defensive team cut for Manvel, along with end T.J. Hardison, inside linebackers Jermaine Brown and Devon Roush, outside linebacker Trevion Robertson, safeties Noah Haygood and Treyvon Jenkins and cornerbacks Kamryn Alexander and Vinson Brown. Potts and Robertson were each unanimous picks by the league coaches, as well.

Potts delivered 25 tackles during the 2018 season with 10 being made behind the line of scrimmage and Robertson provided 47 tackles, three hurries, three interceptions and 1.5 sacks. Receiver Jalen Paxton joined linemen Jhase Edwards and Colton Ray as Maverick second team MHS selections on offense.

The first team offense also included quarterback Malik Hornsby (Marshall); running backs Jerry Davis (Marshall), Devon Achane (Marshall) and Frank Brown (Houston Sterling); fullbacks Jashuan Foster (Sterling) and Javion Chatman (Willowridge); receivers Korey King (Marshall), Dalevon Campbell (Marshall), Latrell Neville (Willowridge), Orivs Fowler (Houston Waltrip) and Kacey Barnett (Marshall); tight end Jamal Ulmer (Marshall); and linemen Andrew Arteaga (Marshall), Larry Moore (Marshall), Daylan Maleveaux (Marshall), Matthew Brown (Willowridge), Jacorey Reed (Willowridge), Harris Cormier (Houston Northside), Trameil Cotton (Sterling) and Keitriel Cotton (Sterling). Brown was selected the offensive MVP and Latrelle Neville, of Willowridge, received the newcomer of the year honor.

The second team offensive unit featured QB’s Vaughnte Frederick (Willowridge) and Ronald Holmes (Northside); RB’s Avant Porter (Madison), Clinton Burnside (Milby), Caleb Lastrape (Waltrip) and Jhamarkis Harris (Willowridge); FB Alejandro Rodriguez (Milby); WR’s Jordan Washington (Waltrip), Devondre Moore (Northside), Lidarian Carter (Willowridge), Trevon Banks (Sharpstown) and Daelon Lewis (Waltrip); tight ends Anthony Williams (Madison) and Anthony Brown (Sterling); and linemen Dominique Norman (Willowridge), Franciso Alvarado (Willowridge), Gabriel Shippard (Madison), Keith Landry (Madison), Dontrey Betts (Milby), Ulises Aguirre (Northside) and Maurice Freeman (Sharpstown).

Other first team defensive picks included tackles Dylan Sanchez (Marshall), London Bennett (Willowridge) and Ja`Michael Jordan (Northside); ends Warren Robinson (Marshall), Frank Miller (Marshall), Douglass Grobmann (Willowridge), Edward Veliz (Milby) and Robert Barnes (Sterling); inside linebacker Floyd Vitatoe (Willowridge); outside linebackers Norman Baker (Marshall) and Laquinn Harkless (Sterling); safeties Jaylon Wilson (Marshall), Michael Jones (Marshall) and Christian Carter (Willowridge); and cornerback Sylvester Labome (Marshall).

State finalist Marshall dominated the individual awards with Achane earning MVP honors, while Robinson claimed the top defensive award and Korey King collected the special teams accolade. James Williams was named coach of the year to give the Buffaloes four of the six awards, as Sterling’s Frank Brown was selected the offensive MVP and Latrelle Neville, of Willowridge, received the newcomer of the year honor.
