Manvel’s Caleb Malbrough and Shadow Creek’s Ashton O’Conner both captured gold medals to highlight the area performances for AISD at the Class 5A State Track and Field meet Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.

While competing at state for the first time as a junior, Malbrough successfully defended his No. 1 seed in the 5A boys’ triple jump with a leap of 48 feet and 1.50 inches to also break a Mavericks’ school record. Malbrough edged Frisco Liberty’s Evan Stewart (46- 9.50) for first-place honors.

“It was all the hard work I’ve been putting in the whole season,” Malbrough said. “It just all came together today. The weather (possibility of rain) wasn’t really a factor for me. I just knew that I had to go out there and jump and take care of business.”

O’Conner’s gold in the boys’ 100-meter dash capped a banner year for the 5-8 senior, who also played at wide receiver on the Sharks’ state finalist football squad last fall. O’Conner motored to a 10.48 time to top Tyler’s Caleb McMiller (10.53).

“I trusted in God and trusted in my training,” O’Conner said. “It was a tough field to prepare against, but I knew we had two weeks of training coming in. My teammates have been pushing me every practice. Making state three times in a row (twice with track and once with football) is great and not everybody can do that. I just trusted in God, because I knew he had a plan.”

Manvel also brought home a combined 12 relay medals in the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Both teams closed the meet with silver medal performances in the 4X400 relay.

Rayah M. Wynn teamed with Madison Sparrow, Desirae Roberts and Ja`Dasia Sims for a time of 3 minutes and 50.96 seconds for the Lady Mavericks, while the MHS boys’ foursome of Xavier Carter, Davin Wilkins, Adam Mason and Dayvon Henderson delivered a 3:16.34 time in the event.

The Manvel boys also collected the bronze in the 4X200 relay (1:26.34) behind Carter, Henderson, Vinson Brown and Wilkins.

Manvel finished third overall in the boys’ standings with 43 points behind runner-up Lancaster (56 points) and 5A champion Marshall (86 points).

The title was the Buffaloes’ fourth in the last five years with only the Mavs’ state crowns in 2017 and 2015 breaking a further consecutive dominating stretch by the Fort Bend powerhouse.

Other area individual finishes included a fourth place by Shadow Creek’s Victoria Wright in the girls’ 100 meters (12.16), a fifth place by Manvel’s John Robinson in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles (38.60), a sixth place by Manvel’s Aryn Johnson in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles (14.88), a sixth place for SC’s Morgan She...
