The Manvel Mavericks tuned up for this week’s playoffs and also discovered their bi-district opponent for Thursday’s 7 p.m. first-round contest at home.

The win sends the second seeded Mavs (8-2 overall, 7-1 in 11-5A Division-2) into the postseason against Barbers Hill. The Eagles edged past Santa Fe 35-25 to earn the third seed in 12-5A D-2.

Josh Coltrin (6 of 8 for 81 yards, one TD) guided Manvel to the four TD’s in the opening period and then sat out the remainder of the contest with head coach Kevin Hall probably not wanting to risk any injury to the senior signal caller. Junior Tucker Yarbrough delivered a solid outing in relief, completing 8 of 12 passes for 164 yards and one TD.

The Mavs forced a three-and-out on the Rams to start things and drove 43 yards in eight plays for their initital tallies.

Ladarius Owens provided a 13-yard scamper in the series and Eric Hebert capped it off by taking a short swing toss from Coltrin three yards into the end zone with 9:12 left in the opening period.

Luis Trevino booted the extra point through the uprights for a 7-0 Manvel lead.

Manvel held the Waltrip offense in check once again and after a 21-yard Rams’ punt, Garrison Johnson busted loose for a 34-yard run to make it 14-0 with 7:01 remaining.

While the Rams finally gained their initial first down on quarterback Jonah Brook’s 25-yard keeper, the Mavs’ defense forced another Waltrip punt. Coltrin promptly hooked up with Jalen Paxton for 49 yards to set up Owens’ 1-yard run for a 21-0 Mavs’ advantage.

Coltrin added his own 1-yard keeper to close the period and after Moreno drilled a 23-yard field goal midway in the second quarter, Johnson rambled 15 yards to paydirt to increase the margin to 38-0 at the break.

Yarbrough then fired a 64- yard scoring strike to Hebert in the third and Michael Chambers exploded for a 59-yard run in the final period to cap the scoring for Manvel.

The Mavs compiled 592 yards of total offense and 17 first downs, while holding the Rams to 185 total yards and six first downs.

In the Barbers Hill-Santa Fe affair, the Indians held a 12-7 lead at halftime behind scoring runs by Austin Lamb (1 yard) and Nathan Kruger (7 yards). However, Eagles’ QB Dalton Hollard threw TD passes in the third quarter to Brady Rogers (32 yards) and Josh Bishop (7 yards) to give Barbers Hill the upper hand for good.

Santa Fe twice drew within three (Kruger’s 5-yard pass to Lamb and Bryce Montemayor’s 16-yard run) at 21-18 and 28-25, respectively, but Dalton Hollard’s 4-yard run regained the double digit edge for Bar... Click here to read full article
